Ingredients for cooking pickled mackerel in a jar
- Freshly frozen mackerel 4 pieces (1.2 kilograms)
- Water 500 milliliters
- Vinegar (9%) 225 milliliters
- Vegetable oil 100 milliliters
- 2 carrots
- Onion 2 pieces (large)
- Peppercorns 1 teaspoon
- Mustard (grains) 2 teaspoons
- Bay leaf 2 pieces
- Salt 1 tablespoon (in marinade)
- Sugar 1 teaspoon
- Salt for salting fish, optional
- Main ingredients: Mackerel, Onion, Carrot

Cooking pickled mackerel in a jar:
Step 1: prepare the mackerel.
First rinse and clean the mackerel by removing the tail and head, as well as taking out the insides and thoroughly cleaning the abdominal cavity. Rinse the cleaned fish thoroughly and dry.
Cut the mackerel into medium-sized slices.
Step 2: add salt to the mackerel.
Portion slices of mackerel well salt, mix, put in a deep container and, having closed the lid, put in the refrigerator overnight (not in the freezer).
Step 3: prepare the marinade.
Pour water into the pan, add vinegar, vegetable oil, sugar and salt to it. Stir and bring to a boil, then throw peppercorns and bay leaves into the marinade. Let the liquid boil yet 2-3 minutes.
Remove the finished marinade from the heat and cool to room temperature.
Step 4: pickle the mackerel in a jar.
Peel the carrots and cut into thin circles. Peel the onion and then trim the vegetable with feathers.
Wash the mackerel from excess salt under cool running water and pat dry with paper towels afterwards.
Put mackerel into a jar, layering it with onions and carrots.
So, layer by layer, alternating pieces of fish and vegetables, fill the jar.
At the very end, pour out the mustard seeds and pour in the marinade, at room temperature. The marinade should completely cover all pieces of mackerel.
Close the jar with a lid and send it to the refrigerator. There the fish should stand one weekand then it can be tasted and served as a cold snack.
Step 5: Serve the pickled mackerel.
You can serve pickled mackerel as a snack on the festive table, or as an addition to lunch and dinner. For example, such a fish with boiled or baked potatoes is very good. You can also cook with it various salads that use pickled fish. Very simple and tasty workpiece.

- If you did not find a suitable jar in size, put the mackerel in a smaller dish. It's okay if the marinade does not reach the neck of the jar, the main thing is that it completely covers pieces of mackerel and vegetables.
